Family Lines
Gwendoline Y. Fortune
Pelican Publishing Co.
Corporate intrigue, family and friendship are unexpected coordinates for a
single mother, her male subordinate, their children and Aunt Pet, with her
intuitive power. This story is a skilled weaving of past, with present
environmental concerns in a multi-cultured world. Family Lines
follows the highly endorsed first novel, Growing Up Nigger Rich,
2002. “Worthy of our best, most serious attention,” George Garrett wrote,
and “Important…illuminating, memorable, necessary,” said Lee Smith.

About the Author
Gwendoline Y. Fortune was born in Houston, Texas, grew up in Anderson, South
Carolina and lived most of her life in Chicago and Skokie, Illinois. Her
mother often shared stories of relatives from both sides of her family:
Native Americans, run-a-way slaves, Scots-Irish, a free-born black
great-grandfather, a Confederate great-grandfather, a “mixed” cowboy
grandfather, and relatives who were missionaries in pre-World War 11 China.
A former “Corporate wife” with strong social and environmental interests,
Family Lines is her second novel.
Dr. Fortune began writing as a columnist for independent newspapers in
Illinois. Writing poetry is an important part of her inspiration. Her
initial novel, Growing Up Nigger Rich, received rave endorsements and
was a regional best seller. Gwen has been a classical soprano and has
traveled on five continents. She describes herself as “curious and a
seeker.” Active in several writers organizations, education has always been
a high priority. She holds degrees in education and social science. Before
her second career as a writer, she was an elementary school teacher and
professor of history and social science. Fortune is active in the alumni
associations of Bennett College, J. C. Smith, Roosevelt, and Nova
Southeastern Universities.
Her current home is Saxapahaw, North Carolina, where she offers individual,
relationship, and group courses and human growth counseling. She has three
sons and one granddaughter.
