GLORY…THE HAIR is the story of one woman’s journey after getting
her hair snipped too much. It depicts how very important hair is to
everyone. Hair is a woman’s personality and her livelihood and
dating life really depends upon it. Some men won’t even look in the
direction of a woman with short hair. Hair is sexy.
Jennifer Williams goes for a routine hair visit at Touch-Up salon.
After leaving, she gets more than she bargained for. Her hairdresser
Shelia Kennedy cuts too much of her hair. Jennifer says it’s about
jealousy and hairdressers trying to destroy a woman’s glory. Shelia,
of course, thinks that Jennifer is overreacting. This hair drama
affects Jennifer at church, on the job and in her relationship with
Troy. See how the two end up in court over hair and it has nothing
to do with a bad relaxer.
I am a native of Grand Junction, Tennessee, which is about 54 miles
east of Memphis. I came to Memphis to attend the University of
Memphis where I received a Bachelor of Arts in Communication. My
major was Broadcast Journalism.
Currently, I am a Language Arts and Creative Writing teacher with
Memphis City Schools. I have been teaching for eleven years with
experience in elementary and middle school grades. I worked in
television news for 13 years. Most recently, I was an overnight
anchor/reporter at WMC-TV (NBC). I was there for about five years
and left in November 1998. It is amazing how more people still
remember me and I left 12 years ago.
I also worked as a freelance correspondent for about 3 years with
BET News. I filed reports out of Memphis with a photographer at the
CBS affiliate here. While I was a freelance reporter for BET News, I
was also a sales supervisor at MCI Telecommunications. At MCI, I won
two Leader’s Ring, two President’s Club Awards and I was nominated
to the Circle of Excellence for quality.
Prior to joining MCI, I worked behind the scenes in television news
at WHBQ-TV (ABC). I have also freelanced for the Tri-State Defender
newspaper as a reporter and columnist and I freelanced with
Contempora Magazine out of Nashville, Tennessee. As my six graders
asked me a few years ago, “Ms. Hamer, where haven’t you worked?”
I also have written a lot of poetry. Many of my poems were
highlighted in the Tri-State Defender. I got one of the poems
published in one of those poetry anthologies when I was in high
school. My book GLORY…THE HAIR is a self-published novel. I am
working on a sequel to that novel. I do plan to publish my
collection of poems one day. I am also a playwright. I wrote the
play “Truancy” which has been performed in Memphis several times.
I finished my Master’s degree in Education (May 2004) and I helped
to start a non-profit foundation in August of 2000. It is called
Young Filmmakers Foundation. That foundation folded in 2007. I am
currently pursuing a Doctorate in Educational Leadership at Union
University’s Germantown, Tennessee campus. On July 31st, I received
my Ed. S in Educational Leadership from Union University.
As far as memberships, I am a member of Temple of Deliverance Church
of God in Christ, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Memphis
Education Association, Tennessee Education Association, National
Education Association and the National Academy of Recording Arts and
Sciences.
I have always tried to help youth since I was one myself. I believe
that mentorship is one of the best ways to keep our young people on
a clear path. Also, I find that mentorship is a life long endeavor.
Even as adults, we need mentoring.
